Tybee Beautification Receives Grant from International Paper

Kathryn Williams, President, and Sara Jones, Treasurer, of the Tybee Beautification Association recently attended the International Paper Company Foundation awards luncheon and accepted a grant from Dave Hailey, Mill Manager of the Savannah Containerboard and Kraft Mill, for its "Leave Only Your Footprints" litter awareness project.

The projects conception resulted through the realization that littering on Tybees public beaches and roadways has escalated into a major problem. In addition to having a negative impact on tourism, and therefore the local economy, beach and roadway litter presents a real hazard to both people and our fragile marine ecosystem. Through this campaign, Tybee Beautification Association plans to increase public awareness of the problems associated with litter through an intensive media campaign involving PSAs, paid advertisements, feature articles written by environmental reporters, billboards, signs, bumper stickers, and distribution of disposable ashtrays through local businesses. We are convinced that these efforts, coupled with the City of Tybees commitment to increase beach patrols and enforcement of the litter laws, will drastically reduce litter, thus providing a safer and healthier environment for all concerned.
